Brothers Emanuel: A Memoir of an American Family
Ezekiel J. Emanuel

Brothers Emanuel: A Memoir of an American Family tells the story of how three competitive and rambunctious brothers of modest means rose to become leading figures in their respective fields – Ezekiel, a leading oncologist and former special advisor on health policy tothe Obama administration; Ari, Hollywood’s foremost superagent and the real-life model for the character of Ari Gold in the American hit series Entourage; and Rahm, one of the leading faces in modern American politics, currently the Mayor of Chicago and the White House Chief of Staff during Obama’s first term.

It also tells the story of this modest immigrant family in 1960s Chicago. From their father’s arrival in the USA after the Israeli War of Independence with just twenty-five dollars in his pocket, we see how the parents’ social consciousness and political activism helped shape the characters of the brothers, particularly that of their mother who took them to rallies and protests – including a civil rights march through Chicago led by Martin Luther King Jr.

Brothers Emanuel is a wry, exuberent and often poignant narrative of how one American family succeeded in raising three extraordinary children.

“This delightful memoir is a deeply personal tale of one family, but it's also about much larger things: America and tribal identity, love and rivalry, and the moral lessons to be learned as you grow up.”

Walter Isaacson, President and CEO of the Aspen Institute, former Chairman and CEO of CNN
