A Life in Three Cities: Frankfurt, London and Jerusalem
Fred S. Worms

Fred Worms was born in Frankfurt where he spent a happy childhood until the comfortable life of his prosperous family was destroyed by his parents’ divorce and the advent of Nazism.

He arrived in England at the beginning of 1937 from an ultra-orthodox Jewish days school and went straight St Paul’s in Hammersmith. Interned briefly as an “enemy alien”, he volunteered for flying duties in the RAF but was turned down because of poor eyesight.

Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant he became an entrepreneur in the engineering and motor industry which led to his first contact and close connection with the Ford Motor Company. He ultimately located his factory on a one-hundred acre derelict site in South Wales, injecting new life into the area.

Over the last forty years, Fred Worms has been deeply committed to Jewish education, to Maccabi and the Maccabiah- the World Jewish Games, to B’nai B’rith Hillel- a meeting-place and accommodation for Jewish university students, to housing for the elderly and to Jerusalem. His vision and philanthropy have revolutionised Jewish community life and education in both England and Israel.

In his autobiography he writes of his passion for sport and music and his love of art. He describes his friendships and meetings with Prime Ministers and Presidents. In his usual outspoken fashion he deals candidly with the various organisations and personalities he has encountered. He reflects on his faith and on his concerns for that faith in the 1990s.

A devoted family man, Fred Worms’ autobiography allows the reader a glimpse into a life lived to the full. He and his wife, Della, a magistrate for 25 years, divide their time and activities between London and Jerusalem where their three daughters and ten grandchildren live.
